Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA has announced that it will be launching two exciting new community engagement programs for life-long learners 20 years and over. The Creative Ground Intensive Workshops and the Heart of the Art Club are both set to begin in March and will embody the company's core purpose of creating brave and playful conversations, with a focus on their motto: "For you. About you. With you."

Commencing Saturday 13 March, the series of weekend workshops available in the "Creative Ground" program are open to emerging and curious performers, designers and writers with an interest in the artistic scene in Australia. Skilled and passionate theatre performer, writer, director and educator, Thomas Papathanassiou (Looming the Memory; Tony Galati the Musical; The Heights), will lead the program and create a supportive space for participants to explore their creativity and meaningful self-expression.

The first workshop in the series, Bedrock for Performers, offers a range of exercises and techniques for participants to explore and create dynamic performances using voice, body and imagination. This workshop will run in the Middar Room at State Theatre Centre of WA from 10.00am to 1.00pm, and will be followed by an afternoon of writing in the Unearthing Story workshop. This workshop will run from 2.00pm to 5.00pm, and emphasise personal narratives and biographical storytelling and playwriting.

The second program, "Heart of the Art Club", is a discussion group that creates conversations around theatre-makers and their works - like a book club, but for theatre.

Open to anyone in the community with an interest in performing arts, these intimate social gatherings provide access to Black Swan artists to chat, inquire and gain insights ahead of productions included in the 2021 With Love season. With the first meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 16, respected theatre-maker, producer and performer Libby Klysz (Variegated Productions; The Big HOO-HAA!) will be discussing all things Shakespeare. You will discover the Bard in a new way, and even learn how to be a part of the voting process to decide which of the Bard's plays will be performed by the company as part of Black Swan's 30th birthday celebrations. Club meetings are to be held from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at Woodvale Library.

Registration for these workshops is essential, with limited spaces filling up quickly.

Creative Ground Intensive Workshops will be held 10.00am - 1.00pm & 2.00pm - 5.00pm in the Middar Room at State Theatre Centre of WA, 174-176 William St, Perth. Registration forms and payment details can be found here. Places are limited and any equiries can be directed to Creative Learning Manager Christie Sistrunk at 08 6212 9300.
