Raw off-form concrete plays a major role in the light industrial appeal of this home, complete with a quirky gallery.

Clients Jim and Pina were very clear on what they required from their new home, and succinctly shared their vision with Vivendi at their first meeting. They wanted a modern, contemporary, light-industrial home that tucked into the surroundings like a beach bunker, protecting them from the wild southwesterly winds but also exploiting the sea breezes, sunshine and views.

The home needed clearly defined yet flexible zones to allow privacy for their teenage daughter, and a retreat for the parents. Year-round entertaining was also important, and the decision was made to refurbish the existing concrete pool. Local designer Doug Paton was engaged to help take these ideas through to concept.

Entering this magnificent home through the glass front door into the foyer, you are presented with the choice of going up the concrete stairs to the main living areas and parents' retreat, past the stairs to the teenager's retreat and guest rooms, or through the studio to the lower alfresco and pool.

The raw off-form concrete stairs are one of the main features of this house, inspired by the stairs at Jim's surf clubhouse. Pina requested large 330mm treads, and Doug was able to incorporate a workbench into the middle landing. With
clean simple lines, this unassuming mass of concrete was quite the structural challenge, the end result complemented by large-format tiles and the off-form ceiling.

Upstairs, the expansive kitchen, dining and living room with double-sided fireplace offers ocean views, while a turn to the left will take you to the parents' retreat.
Paying homage to Jim's love of the waves, a long hallway is transformed into a surfboard gallery with boards adorning the walls, adding a personal touch to the upper level.
