Like a Shadow, I Am and I Am Not, 2015

Artist | Rubaba Haider was born and raised in Quetta, Pakistan, and her ethnicity is Hazara-Pakistani. Now based in Melbourne, her earlier works take the Persian miniature technique of pointillism and incorporate it in a more contemporary form by taking inspiration from everyday objects and painting them using traditionalist techniques. The concept behind her body of work is deeply rooted in the experience of witnessing her mother undergo invasive surgical treatment, and nursing her through to recovery.
Artwork | Haider's new work Like A Shadow, I Am and I Am Not (this title coming from the poetry of Persian Sufi-Saint Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, or Rumi) experiments with installation and performative art, and is inspired by objects from her mother's sewing kit. Haider also applies objects of her culture – traditional Hazara music that grows to merge with Western classical music and back again, reminiscent of her new and old roots in both worlds.

Artist | Senior contemporary artist Miriam Stannage (born 1939) is a relentless innovator. Her practice is founded on a deep intellectual engagement with, and curiosity about the challenges and nature of contemporary life. For the last 50 years, she has produced works that resist easy categorisation.
Artwork | Stannage playfully recontextualises images of pop culture icons Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, placing the figures in Kings Park during wildflower season.

and the fragile and transitory nature of our time on this planet. Major photographic series will be on display.

Located within UWA's grounds, the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery presents four seasons each year of innovative and varied exhibitions featuring contemporary and historic art. All exhibitions are free to enter. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm.
