Bos Architects is committed to ensuring accessibility to all spaces, both commercial and residential.

Maria Gillman from Bos Architects was invited by a medical group to transform an old Federation-style house into consulting rooms for the practice.

The ex-residence was required to include a waiting room, reception, store room, and staff and patient facilities. An important aspect of the client's brief was to provide a pleasant working environment for staff.

Maria created a design that retained original features where possible, while introducing new contemporary elements to ensure functionality.

Compliance with Australian Standards for access and mobility required existing doorways to be widened and new doors made to match the original design, as well as the installation of a universal access toilet. In addition, ensuring accessible egress required the installation of an automatic door to the carpark, which has an accessible parking bay.

Transforming a home to a business triggered compliance requirements for fire separation and safety, which meant the windows facing the boundary fence had to be fixed permanently shut, and external sprinklers installed. Installation of exit signs and fire extinguishers were required.

Maintaining the property's character was achieved through the retention and renovation of the original verandah, with new posts and a tiled floor finish. The tuck-pointing was restored and the leadlight front door modified for accessibility.

For the staff, the kitchen was relocated and an external door to the garden was fitted, giving them a tranquil spot for breaks.
