The Kimberley Indonesia Project, funded by the Australia Indonesia Institute, is a collaboration between Kimberley Aboriginal musicians and Indonesian music practitioners and academics. The project aims to build a strong foundation for long-term cultural exchange programs between Indonesian and northern Australian artists.
Over 18 months, Indonesian artists will take up Residency in Kimberley communities. As part of this, they will experience traditional Aboriginal culture as they work with Aboriginal artists. The process will then be reciprocated with Kimberley artists travelling to Indonesia for Residencies.
Evolving over three phases, the Kimberley Indonesia Project will both facilitate the creation of new music works and performances and develop greater cultural understanding. This will support the development of individual and institutional relationships that will ensure the work from this project will grow across time and regions.
Phase One | November 2018 Indonesian composer and ethnomusicologist Ubiet/Nyak Ina Raseuki and Tura's Artistic Director Tos Mahoney visits Broome and communities of the Dampier Peninsula, collaborating with Aboriginal musicians and finding points of connection.

Phase Two | August 2019 A group of Kimberley artists will travel to Jakarta and Yogyakarta, presenting their own work and collaborating with an ever-expanding group of Indonesian composers and musicians.

Phase Three | September 2020 All participating artists will gather in Broome for further collaborations and a mini Festival of the work created. KIP will include the use of languages from west Kimberley.
