WAAPA's upcoming stage performances that are not to be missed

As WA’s premier performing arts establishment, WAAPA’s shows are always worth checking out. Here’s a taste of what’s coming up, live on stage.

Assassins

Studio Underground, 11th - 17th November

Hitting the stage in early November, Assassins is the erratic American story of 9 presidential assassins who are brought together across time and space. The cast of second year WAAPA students bring a wildly entertaining performance, including singing, dancing and exploring bold and hilarious philosophies. Staged at Studio Underground and directed by Melanie Hillman, this is one you won't want to miss. Buy your tickets here.

Icon: An Extraordinary Event

Geoff Gibbs Theatre, 11th - 17th November

Celebrating the influence of German choreographer Pina Bausch on generations of performers across the world, Icon brings glory to her work, performed for the first time ever in Perth this November. Debuting on the 11th November, this performance has been crafted to appreciate the beauty of the famous Tannhäuser Bacchanal and will be danced by second and third year students of WAAPA with LINK dance company. Tannhäuser Bacchanal is taught by leading artist-in-residence Marigia Maggipinto, and Ophelia Young who are both long standing members of the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Tickets go on sale to the public on September 14th.

Tilt

Blue Room Theatre, 7th - 10th, 14th - 17th September

Over two weeks in September, be entertained as WAAPA's graduating performance makers showcase their creative talents in the Blue Room Theatre. Tilt presents powerful performances and inventive stagecraft, this performance cannot be missed. Secure your seats here.

Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities

State Theatre Centre, 8th - 10th, 12th - 14th September

Fires in the Mirror is quite simply, the most compelling and sophisticated view of racial and class conflict that one could hope to encounter.” – The New York Times. Brought to you by WAAPA's Third Year Acting Students, this gripping story battling themes of racism and crime is created from interviews with over 50 members of the Jewish and Black communities. Orestes

Enright Studio, 8th - 10th, 12th - 14th September

A modern take on Euripides' darkly comic tragedy, Orestes is performed by WAAPA's 2nd Year Acting Students through Anne Carson's translation. This captivating performance will play between the 8th and 14th of September.

Samovila

Roadhouse Theatre, 11th - 12th, 14th - 17th November

Award-winning theatre artist Bagryana Popov leads the 2nd Year Acting students on a journey of cultural exploration and imagination to devise an original theatre piece inspired by Bulgarian folklore. Coming to the stage between the 11th and 17th of November, Samovila tells tales of Europe's rich mythologies captivating audiences. Check out tickets here.

Hansel and Gretel

Geoff Gibbs Theatre 9th - 10th, 12th - 15th September

With music direction by the critically-acclaimed conductor Jessica Gethin, director Rachel McDonald brings the well-loved opera Hansel and Gretel to the stage performed by Classical Voice Students and WAAPA Symphony Orchestra. Based on the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, enjoy a night of music at the Geoff Gibbs Theatre. Get tickets here.

Frankenstein and the Lion of Nemea

Enright Studio, 11th - 12th, 14th - 16th November

Drawing inspiration from Mary Shelly's classic horror novel and performed by the talented Aboriginal Performance students, Frankenstein and the Lion of Nemea explores the dangers of over-reaching and delves into the provoking questions of art, religion and science. Brought to you by David Milroy who wrote the critically acclaimed Windmill Baby, and directed by Rick Brayford, this performance is definitely one to see. Grab your tickets now.
