The Mundaring area in Western Australia is home to the impressive Mundaring Weir, a significant engineering landmark and a beautiful destination for nature lovers. Located in natural bushland in the Perth Hills, Mundaring Weir is about a 40-minute drive from Perth. Completed in 1903, the weir was the starting point of the water pipeline that pumped water to the Kalgoorlie goldfields, 700 kilometers away. At the foot of the weir, visitors can explore the Number 1 Pump Station Museum, where they can learn more about the C.Y. O'Connor, the engineer behind the project.
Mundaring Weir offers a range of activities for visitors, including scenic drives, picnics, and bushwalking. There are several walking trails around the weir that take you deep into virgin bush, where you can observe beautiful native plants, animals, and plenty of birds. You can also walk across the massive concrete weir wall. While improvement works are underway, there will be limited access both above and below the weir wall. Nevertheless, Mundaring Weir remains an idyllic destination for those looking to explore Western Australia's natural beauty and heritage.
