Walgett local history museums

The Walgett Historical Society in Walgett, New South Wales, is dedicated to preserving and promoting historical information and artifacts, housed in the original Walgett Shire Building built in 1913 with a unique pressed tin interior. The museum features an extensive display of photographs depicting life on the rivers, including paddle boat steamers and agriculture, as well as inventions by Frederick York Wolseley, known for his agricultural innovations.

The Historical Society Museum serves as a repository of historical information and a hub for genealogical research, offering assistance with family history inquiries for those tracing their roots in the region. Located in Fox Street, Walgett, NSW 2832, it is a valuable resource for individuals interested in local history and ancestry.

In addition to the museum, Walgett is home to the Jimmy Little Memorial, a tribute to the successful First Nations musician who resided in Walgett. The mural, based on a photograph by John Elliott, includes a river system map of the area and local totems, created by artists Jenny McCracken and local Aboriginal artists to honor Jimmy Little's legacy in the community.
