Abercrombie House

Abercrombie House was built in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia in the 1870s by the Stewart family, pioneers of Bathurst.

William Stewart came to Australia from England in 1825 as part of the colonization of the penal colony (Australia). James Horne Stewart, son of William Stewart, built the Abercrombie House circa 1870. It was then called 'The Mount' and it took eight years to build.

A photograph taken 15 years after its construction was included in a Bathurst pamphlet in 1893 and is shown at right. James lived there until his death in 1920 when he was 95 years old. James was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1825. He came to Australia with his family in 1835 at the age of ten. In 1855 he married Harriet Eliza Boyce, daughter of the Rev. William Boyce, a very prominent clergyman, in Toxteth Park, Sydney. The couple had five children, three sons and two daughters.
