Description
Adelaide River railway station is a former station on the now closed Northern Australian Railway in the Northern Territory, Australia, 124 kilometers south of the line's terminus in Darwin.
The station officially opened in 1889 after the bridge over the Adelaide River was completed in December 1888. The station building contained staff quarters and a refreshment room for passengers. At the back of the building was a reservoir and overhead water tank for the steam locomotives working on the line. When administration of the Northern Territory was transferred to the Commonwealth Government in 1911, the Commonwealth Railways took over control of the line and stations from the South Australian Railways. Day to allow the railway workers a day of rest and relaxation by the river. The tradition eventually became a public holiday in the Northern Territory even after the line closed, with Picnic Day taking place on the first Monday in August each year. Friends of the North Australian Railway still hold traditional railway picnics at the station to mark the occasion.
