Description
Welcome to Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve.
Experience the beauty of some of the region's most beautiful bushland by visiting Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve, a valuable educational and cultural resource where the environmental heritage of the local area is preserved for everyone to experience and enjoy. This 2.56 hectare reserve is one of the last remaining examples of the vegetation that once covered the whole sand belt area in and around Springvale South.
Located on Mackay Street, Springvale South 3172, Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve is surrounded by suburban housing. The Springvale South Community Association initially purchased 4 hectares of land in 1950, and a section of is now Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve. The Reserve was officially opened to the public on 10 September 1978 and was named in his memory. Council continues with Alex Wilkie’s vision and offers a range of education opportunities for visitors, schools and early learning centres.
The reserve offers several activities that visitors can engage in. Start by taking a self-guided tour along the Nature Trail, which follows interpretive signage that meanders through the stunning bushland. Explore the environment using your senses on the Sense Trail, which is also where all our Natureplay events are held. If you feel like having a picnic, take advantage of the picnic facilities available in a beautiful natural setting.
Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve has the facilities necessary to ensure a comfortable visit for visitors. Near the entry point is a shelter with toilets, water tap, and a BBQ where you can enjoy your picnic. The Reserve also has a playground, disabled parking, and public toilets.
