Description

Adelaide Himeji Garden is a charming Japanese garden located in Park 18 (Peppermint Park / Wita Wirra) in the southern part of the Adelaide Park Lands near South Terrace, between Pulteney and Hutt Streets.

It was gifted by Adelaide's sister city, Himeji in 1982. The garden's architectural features were designed by Yoshitaka Kumada, a famous Japanese landscape designer, who selected trees and shrubs from Melbourne and stones from near Adelaide. The garden is primarily composed of a sansui, a mountain and lake garden, and a kare-sansui, a dry rock garden. It showcases a range of gardening techniques taught by Kumada to the council's horticulture team. The Sea of Sand in the garden requires careful preservation of its pattern, depicting waves breaking into islands and straight lines for the ocean. The paving tiles are intentionally sized to encourage visitors to slow down and engage with the environment. A visit to Adelaide Himeji Garden promises a magnificent afternoon in Adelaide.
