Description

The Mawson Trail is a long-distance cycling and walking trail in South Australia that spans almost 900 kilometers from the Adelaide Hills to Blinman in the Flinders Ranges.

It is named after explorer Douglas Mawson. The trail primarily traverses remote areas of the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges, mostly away from bitumen roads. It is suitable for mountain bikes and offers off-road tracks and unmade roads or forest reserves. The trail also passes through several country towns, including Lobethal, Birdwood, Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Kapunda, Riverton, Auburn, Clare, Burra, Hallett, Spalding, Laura, Melrose, Wilmington, Quorn, Cradock, Hawker, Rawnsley Park Station, Wilpena, and Blinman.

BikeSA hosts a guided two-week tour of the entire length of the Mawson Trail every second year. The trail is directly connected to the coast at West Beach through a dedicated pedestrian/cycleway that leads into the Adelaide Hills. The route can be ridden in either direction, with signage provided for both directions.

The Mawson Trail offers a perfect opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the remote regions of the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges while discovering the picturesque towns of South Australia. Whether you choose to join a guided tour or embark on your own adventure, the Mawson Trail promises an exciting and memorable trip filled with history and unique cultural experiences.
