Description

Windara Reef Ardrossan is the first and largest shellfish restoration reef in Australia, located in Gulf St Vincent.

It is named after the Narungga name for the eastern section of Yorke Peninsula. The reef is situated 1km off the Rogues Point coast, 7km south of Ardrossan, and is at a water depth of 8-10 meters.

Windara Reef offers great opportunities for recreational fishers, with fish species including King George Whiting and Snapper. The site covers a 4-hectare area and is constructed using custom-made concrete structures, Yorke Peninsula limestone, and Pacific Oyster shells. It acts as a breeding ground for fish, shellfish, and other aquatic creatures. Over time, the reef will expand, creating more habitats and increasing the fish population.

Windara Reef can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to go is from October to April when the water is warmer.

To reach Windara Reef Ardrossan, you can take a boat from Ardrossan, which is 7km away from the reef. The Ardrossan Jetty provides parking and a boat ramp. Alternatively, you can take a guided tour that offers commentary along the way.

If you want to learn more about Windara Reef Ardrossan, there is a miniature version of the reef located on the clifftop at the end of the Main Street in Ardrossan. It shows the structure of the reef below the surface and provides a brief explanation. This is a great opportunity to gain knowledge about the reef and its importance for the local marine life, enhancing your visit to Windara Reef.
