Description
The majesty and grandeur of brass instruments has been celebrated since the Renaissance. Not just for their power, either.
They’re thrilling when played softly, too, and indeed the title of Giovanni Gabrieli’s piece means ‘Quiet and Loud Sonata’ because it was one of the first pieces to specify the level of volume with which the instruments should be played.
This programme explores brass music from Elizabethan England to the present day, with New Zealander Gemma Peacocke being the latest composer to fall under its spell.
