Description
Located in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, the Barren Grounds Nature Reserve covers 2,024 hectares (5,000 acres) of land.
It is surrounded by the city of Kiama to the west, Budderoo National Park to the east, and can be accessed from the south via a local road and a bush walk from the town of Berry. The reserve is also close to Bush Heritage Australia's Nameless Sylvan Reserve.
The reserve offers stunning views of the coastline from several lookouts, including the Drawing Room Rocks in the southern section, which feature interesting granite rock formations.
Barren Grounds Nature Reserve is an important bird area, spanning 7,334 hectares (18,120 acres), and is home to endangered bird species such as eastern bristlebirds, pilotbirds, and rockwarblers. The reserve's unique combination of sandstone heath and eucalypt woodland habitats provides a suitable environment for these species.
Formerly known as the Barren Grounds Bird Observatory, the park is now a protected area for both animals and plants. Visitors can still enjoy observing the diverse birdlife in the reserve and learn about the various bird species that call it home.
