Koonya Beach is easily accessible via two car parks located at the end of Hughes Road. These car parks offer easy access to the beach and are connected to a loop walking track leading visitors to the beachfront. The walking track is wheelchair and pram accessible, making it ideal for families with young ones and those with impaired mobility.

Apart from being a great beach destination, Koonya Beach offers a breathtaking view of the ocean from a lookout located close to the car park. This lookout point provides visitors with an opportunity to take stunning panoramic shots of the beach and the ocean. Koonya beach is also home to an array of native flora and fauna, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts.

Koonya Beach is most suited to surfing, fishing and beachcombing because of the dangerous conditions. The beach is unpatrolled and can be hazardous due to large waves, strong currents, and submerged rocky reefs, and swimming is not allowed. For those interested in water activities, there are plenty of other beaches in the surrounding areas that are better suited to swimming and water sports.
