Description

Brogo Dam is a man-made marvel located in the scenic South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia.

This uncontrolled, ungated rockfill embankment dam serves several purposes, including environmental flows, hydro-electric power generation, irrigation, and water supply. Construction began in 1964 and was completed in 1976.

The dam wall was built to actively supply water for irrigation and potable water to the towns of Bermagui, Cobargo, and Quaama. It sustains the dairy farming industry in the Bega Valley, providing a reliable water supply for farmers along the Brogo and Bega rivers.

The Brogo Dam wall is made of concrete-faced rock fill and is 43 metres high and 260 metres long. When full, the maximum depth of the water is 25 metres, and it holds back 8,980 megalitres of water. The catchment area measures 400 square kilometres, and the dam covers 100 hectares of surface area. The uncontrolled unlined rock cut spillway can discharge 3,700 cubic metres of water per second.

Brogo Dam is a popular location for recreational activities such as boating and canoeing. The dam's waters are home to fish like Australian Bass and eels. The surrounding area offers beautiful scenery for photographers, with ferns and rock orchids to capture in memories.

The impressive size and scenic surroundings of Brogo Dam make it a mesmerizing destination for a day trip.
