Description
Welcome to Broken Head Nature Reserve. Broken Head Nature Reserve is a breathtakingly beautiful 98-hectare (240-acre) protected nature reserve in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia.
Located next to the promontory of Broken Head and approximately 9 km south of Cape Byron, the easternmost point of Australia, the reserve is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic Australian wilderness experience.
One of the most noteworthy features of the nature reserve is the intact segment of littoral rainforest it contains. This type of rainforest is unique in that it grows in coastal areas, and much of it has been destroyed due to activities such as agriculture, mining, or housing. The reserve preserves species of trees such as Tuckeroo, Broad-leaf Lilly Pilly, Native Elm, Pear Fruited Tamarind, Bennett's Ash, Bangalow Palm, Rusty Rose Walnut and Hoop Pine. Climbers such as Whip Vine and Lawyer Cane are also common, giving the reserve a dense and verdant feel.
As a nature reserve, Broken Head is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. The reserve is also home to the Australian brush turkey, bandicoots, wallabies, and koalas.
The area is also known for its rich Aboriginal culture. When visiting Broken Head, visitors can participate in cultural activities and activities that explore the importance of this heritage.
