Practicing art is a retreat for me and an opportunity to appreciate our unique West Australian naturescape and as such there is often a quiet stillness to much of my work.
My art is influenced by growing up on a farm in the foothills of the Darling Ranges and by each of my grandmother’s great love of gardening. My maternal grandmother was a florist and if I wasn’t sitting alongside her making baskets of my own arrangements we were at the beach fishing and collecting driftwood. My paternal grandmother was a dedicated gardener with a huge garden, trees to climb and enchanted places to hide away in. So I am drawn to our flora and fauna. These typically feature in smaller still life oil paintings where I enjoy the simplicity of arrangement or the ability to create a moment that hopefully draws attention to our endangered wildlife. Larger landscape paintings are all about our forests and craggy coastal scenes from across the Cape and through to Rottnest.
It's only after making the decision to leave a corporate career that I have been able to inhabit my studio more permanently. I am currently studying Fine Art at Curtin University and this is my first time exhibiting with Margaret River Region Open Studios.
