Description

The Cape Borda Lightstation is a unique square lighthouse that was built in 1858 and is located on the western side of Kangaroo Island, overlooking Investigator Strait.

It was established to aid ships entering the treacherous waters of the strait from the west. The lightstation offers visitors a glimpse into early lightkeepers' living conditions and the harsh life they led in isolation.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the Cape Borda Lightstation settlement, which includes the monitor room where the light was controlled and a museum displaying artifacts and telling the story of the early lightkeepers. The view from the top of the lighthouse is breathtaking and can be reached by climbing 112 steps.

After the tour, visitors can enjoy walking trails around the park, including the Cliff Top Hike. This short trail leads to a stone lookout that provides a great vantage point for spotting whales and dolphins. The trails also offer opportunities to see Kangaroo Island's wildlife, such as echidnas, kangaroos, wallabies, and various bird species.

The Cape Borda Lightstation is open to visitors every day of the year, except for Christmas Day. It is recommended to visit during the morning hours when the light is at its strongest.

To reach the Cape Borda Lightstation, you can access Flinders Chase National Park on the western end of Kangaroo Island via the South Coast Road from Kingscote. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes by car. Alternatively, you can fly to Kingscote Airport and hire a car to reach the lightstation.
