Description

Located in the beautiful Mitta Valley, the Dartmouth Dam is the largest capacity dam in Victoria and the highest structure of its kind in Australia.

It serves multiple purposes, including irrigation, hydro-electric power generation, water supply, and conservation. The dam's associated reservoir, Lake Dartmouth, is a popular recreational spot and a fishery for trout and macquarie perch. The reservoir is regularly restocked to ensure a good supply of fish for recreational fishing. Lake Dartmouth offers opportunities for water sports, swimming, and boating, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding lush countryside. There are designated camping areas around the lake, some of which are only accessible by boat. Houseboating and waterskiing are not permitted on the lake. The best time to visit Dartmouth Dam and Lake Dartmouth is during the summer when the water level is high and the area is teeming with life. Access to Dartmouth Dam is easy from Dartmouth Township via Mitta Mitta Rd, a well-maintained scenic route. Alternatively, visitors can take the Great Alpine Road, which is part of the Australian Alpine National Tourist Drive, connecting Bairnsdale with Wangaratta.
