Mount Torbreck Summit Walk

Tourist attractions

Barnewall Plains Road, Eildon VIC 3713, Eildon, VIC 3713

Description

The Mount Torbreck Summit Walk is a challenging 4.2-kilometre hike that starts from the Barnewall Plains Picnic Area.

The trail is marked by orange arrows and rises to an altitude of 1516 metres. It is recommended to hike with a friend, wear proper hiking shoes, leave early, and take warm clothes.

As you hike up the mountain, you'll need to be careful with your footing and navigate fallen trees and rocks. The summit is marked by a rock cairn and offers stunning views of the surrounding ranges, including Lake Eildon and the higher ranges near Mt Buller. The ash forests covering the ranges and the beautiful scenery in all directions are impressive.

The track is open all year round, but the best time to hike Mount Torbreck is between November and April when the weather is warm and sunny. Hiking in the winter months is not recommended due to challenging pockets of snow.

To get to the trailhead, take Eildon - Jamieson Road off the Goulburn Valley Hwy between Eildon and Thornton. Turn right onto Barnewall Plains Road, 100 metres past the Jerusalem Creek Road junction. The road is unsealed but suitable for 2WD vehicles and will lead you to the start of the trail.
