Description

Located in Timber Creek, Gregory’s Tree is a significant site in the history of Australia.

This boab tree is a living monument to the exploration of the North of Australia during 1855-56. It marks the area of Gregory's 'entrenchment camp' and still bears inscriptions noting the date of the camp arrival and departure.

The North Australia Expedition led by Augustus Charles Gregory in 1855-56 undertook significant exploration in the Northern area of Australia. The explorers faced challenges in the form of difficult terrain, scarcity of water, and hostile Indigenous communities. Gregory's Tree is a living monument to the significant contributions of the expedition during the exploration. It was named after the leader of the expedition, and the species was formally described by a botanist, Ferdinand Von Mueller.

Gregory’s Tree has special significance to the local Ngaringman people and is registered as a Sacred Site. It is a testimony to their long-standing connection to the land and their culture. It is also a reminder of the impact that European explorers had on the Indigenous way of life. Visitors are requested to respect the site's cultural and spiritual significance.

Visitors to Gregory’s Tree can see the boab tree in all its grandeur. A stroll around the site will provide glimpses of the inscriptions on the tree trunk that document the important dates of the North Australian Expedition. The site also provides an opportunity to learn about the significant contributions made by the Indigenous communities and European explorers. The best time to visit is during the dry season
