Description

Located in Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), 17 Mile Falls is a hidden gem and a must-see for nature lovers.

The falls can only be accessed by trekkers on the Jatbula Trail - a one-way 62 km walk from the Nitmiluk Gorge to Leliyn/Edith Falls. The trail takes 4 to 5 days to complete and offers views of some of the most scenic locations in the park.

As the name suggests, 17 Mile Falls is a stunning 17-mile stretch of waterfalls, fed by a permanent water source. The falls run throughout the year, providing visitors with endless photo opportunities. The sandstone plateau of the national park acts as a giant sponge that traps water, which slowly seeps into rivers and creeks. Besides the waterfalls, trekkers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the national park that offers ample opportunities for wildlife spotting, bird watching, and swimming.

Located on the Jatbula Trail, the 17 Mile Falls campground is the third campground reached by walkers. A popular spot, the campground provides trekkers with serene and striking scenery. Amenities such as toilets and an Emergency Call Device (ECD) are conveniently located close to the campsites. Trekkers are advised to book in advance as the limited camping positions fill quickly. Walking and camping fees apply.

The best time to visit 17 Mile Falls is during the dry season (April to September), when the river flow is strong, and the falls are at their most spectacular. The temperatures are pleasant, and the humidity is low, making it an ideal time for trekking and other outdoor activities.
