Description

The Wollongong Botanic Garden is located in the suburb of Keiraville, at the base of Mount Keira.

Established in 1964, it officially opened to the public in September 1970. The garden is co-located with Gleniffer Brae, a historic house, and is a popular venue for events and functions. The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music is also located in the same precinct, offering visitors a variety of music events. Additionally, the garden manages annexes in Fairy Meadow, Primbee, and Mount Keira.

The garden features various themed areas, including a rose garden, herb garden, woodland garden, azalea bank, and succulent plants. There are also different rainforest areas, such as Illawarra rainforest, subtropical rainforest, dry rainforest, and exotic rainforest. A creek flows through the garden, joining the Para Creek and continuing into the Puckeys Estate Reserve. The azalea garden and succulent garden are popular attractions for both local and international tourists. University students also utilize the garden's facilities for learning about different plant species.

One notable feature is the Japanese-style wooden bridge over the creek, symbolizing the connection between Wollongong and Kawasaki, one of Wollongong's sister cities in Japan. The BHP fountain at the northern entrance is another attraction, known for its artful design. The lake in the heart of the garden is a local attraction, with a boardwalk leading to a rotunda in the center. Ducks, geese, and seagulls can often be seen in and around the lake, enhancing its scenic beauty.
