Description

Wollongong Botanic Garden is a peaceful green oasis located in the Keiraville suburb of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia.

Established in 1964 and opened to the public in September 1970, the garden covers an area of 30 hectares at the foothills of Mount Keira. The garden is adjacent to the historic Gleniffer Brae house, which is frequently used for functions and events. The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music is also located within the garden. Together with these annexes, the garden provides a perfect venue for both educational and recreational activities.

The garden has a diverse range of themed areas, including a herb garden, woodland garden, rose garden, azalea bank, succulent garden, and several rainforest areas. There are Illawarra rainforest, dry rainforest, subtropical rainforest, and exotic rainforest, each featuring indigenous plant species from these respective regions. The garden boasts many attractions, including a Japanese-style wooden bridge over the creek, built as a gift of friendship to symbolize the connection between Wollongong and its sister city in Japan, Kawasaki. The stunning BHP fountain at the northern entrance, facing the University of Wollongong, is another notable landmark that has put it on the local art tour. The azalea garden and succulent garden are both local attractions, with the former being particularly popular during spring, when it blooms in all its colors. Many visitors come to the garden to take pictures of these captivating flowers. The lake is also a favorite spot, with its boardwalk leading to a rotunda in the center. Its serene waters are inhabited by ducks, geese, and seagulls.
