Description
Lake Cargelligo is a charming town in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated on Lake Cargelligo and is part of the Lachlan Shire. The town had a population of 1,479 people at the 2016 census, with an indigenous population of 239 (16.2%) and other Australian-born population of 1,186 (80.4% of the total population).
The name of the town is said to be a corruption of the Aboriginal word kartjellakoo, meaning 'he had a coolamon,' or derived from Wiradjuri and Ngiyambaa "gajal" for water container with suffix "lugu" for "her" or "his."
Lake Cargelligo lies within the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people. In 1817, John Oxley and George Evans explored the area and followed the Lachlan River down to Lake Cargelligo. The town was known as Cudgelligo or Cudgellico in the 1800s, but the name was officially changed when the railway arrived in 1917. The local Aboriginal population was removed from their traditional country and consolidated at other locations under the control of the Aboriginal Protection Board.
Lake Cargelligo has a vibrant culture centered around water activities on the lake, making it a popular destination for tourists. The town, along with nearby Tullibigeal, has a rugby league team in the Group 20 Rugby League competition, known as the Sharks.
