Description

The internationally important wetlands at Kerang Lakes are recognized under the Ramsar Convention.

These wetlands include 23 lakes and swamps that possess remarkable diversity and vary widely in size, permanence, depth, salinity, and vegetation type. Two lakes located in this remarkable area are the Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake.

Lake Charm is a popular destination for recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing, bird watching, fishing, and kayaking. The lake is fresh water and is quite large, providing ample space for visitors to enjoy their activities. It is a regular host for the Victorian Ski Racing titles as well as Victorian point score events. In these events, competitors come from all over Australia to participate. Fishing is a popular activity at Lake Charm with a variety of fish species regularly caught, such as redfin, yellow belly, and Murray cod. The eastern shore of the lake is ideal for bird watching, and visitors can take delight in the variety of bird species in the area. There are two waterfront caravan parks located near Lake Charm, which provide a relaxed setting perfect for a family getaway or a day trip.

Kangaroo Lake is another lake located near the Kerang Lakes that is renowned for its fishing and water sports. The lake has a caravan park located on the lake foreshore, making it quite easy for visitors to access the lake. The north end of the lake is popular with day visitors who engage in all sorts of recreational activities such as swimming and picnicking. The west side of the lake is perfect for fishing and water sports activities. More recently, the lake hosted Jettin Vic races in 2021, the first-ever jet ski races in Victoria in ten years.
