Description

Lake Eacham, also known as Yidyam or Wiinggina, is a volcanic crater lake located on the Atherton Tableland of Queensland, Australia.

It is part of the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics of Queensland and is a popular destination within the Tablelands Region local government area.

The origins of Lake Eacham are uncertain, but it is believed to have formed through volcanic activity. The lake's enclosed catchment and unique ecosystem make it a natural wonder and an important protected area.

Lake Eacham has a rich history dating back to 1886 when it was included in survey plans as a farming block newline. For almost 50 years, the lake was managed and enjoyed as a scenic reserve. In 1934, it was declared Lake Eacham National Park.

Lake Eacham is an enclosed catchment with no watercourse leading to or from it. Its unique ecosystem hosts thousands of small animals, including the Lake Eacham rainbowfish. Efforts are now underway to reintroduce the species to its original habitat.

Lake Eacham is an essential feature of the Crater Lakes National Park, which is protected under Queensland State legislation. The park also contains dense rainforest vegetation and is managed and protected by Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Visitors to Lake Eacham can enjoy activities such as swimming, canoeing, bushwalking, and bird watching. The lake has a maximum depth of 65.5 meters and a well-maintained circuit walk. The area by the lake is perfect for relaxing, photography
