Description

Little Island is a popular destination for nature lovers visiting Lord Howe Island.

It is a secluded paradise that can be reached by a gentle walk along the southwestern shoreline. The walk takes you through ancient forests of Banyan trees and endemic Kentia palms.

From March to September, visitors can witness the rare Providence Petrels. These birds breed only on Lord Howe Island, and in the late afternoons, they return to their burrows by the hundred. Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts will find this sight fascinating, and they can even call the birds down from the sky with a loud call.

At the end of the track, there is a beautiful patch of green grass where visitors can sit and enjoy stunning views of the mountains and the Tasman Sea. The vista is breathtakingly scenic and peaceful, making it a perfect spot to spend hours observing the surrounding areas.

Visitors can go to Little Island all year round, but the best time to witness the Providence Petrels is from March to September. To access the island, visitors need to walk over a kilometer from the road along the southwestern shoreline. It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, sun protection gear, and carry plenty of water. The walk is easy and suitable for visitors of all ages.
