Description

Located in the heart of the Mackay region in Queensland, Australia, the Pioneer River is one of the most attractive 'blue water' rivers in the district.

The river flows from the Clarke Connors Ranges in the South West and ultimately flows into the Pacific Ocean at Mackay. The Pioneer River can be easily accessed, and people can enjoy various activities there.

The Pioneer River provides various activities including canoeing, kayaking, platypus spotting, swimming, and even fishing. Local residents love to fish for barramundi and sooty grunter as both species are renowned for their fighting abilities. Moreover, people who love to see interesting creatures can frequently spot groups of Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) near their burrows on the northern bank behind Melba House. Besides, the river also attracts a wide variety of native and migratory bird species, including ducks, swans, pelicans, and cormorants, along with freshwater turtles that inhabit the river's water.

Access to the Pioneer River is restricted by freehold ownership. There are also other access points available in the Valley to the river at Pleystowe (boat ramp), Mirani (Platypus Beach - next to road bridge), Mia Mia (next to the road bridge), Pinevale, Gargett (next to road bridge) and Neem Hall (Finch Hatton).

The Pioneer River can be enjoyed throughout the year as the climate is relatively mild in the region newline.
