Description

Mount Keira is a significant landmark in Wollongong, standing at a height of 463.9 meters.

It is located just four kilometers northwest of the city's Central Business District and is part of the Illawarra escarpment. Mount Keira offers sweeping views over the city and is a popular destination for nature walks and scenic drives.

The name "Keira" is derived from an Indigenous Australian term meaning large lagoon or high mountain. The Dharawal Aboriginal people called it Djera, which translates to wild turkey. The mountain is usually pronounced Kee-rah.

One of the main attractions on Mount Keira is the 5.5-kilometer Mount Keira Ring Track, a walking track that passes through varied terrains and Illawarra Escarpment forests. The track starts and finishes in a scenic picnic spot, providing visitors with excellent opportunities to explore the natural scenery while enjoying the fresh air.

The Mount Keira Lookout is another popular attraction, offering a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque landscape and take in a bird's eye view of Wollongong. The lookout is accessible seven days a week during daylight hours, and there are barbecue facilities and public toilets available for visitors.

Mount Keira enjoys a temperate climate, making it suitable for exploration throughout the year. To reach Mount Keira, visitors can drive, cycle, or walk via Mount Keira Road, which is conveniently located just four kilometers northwest of Wollongong's Central Business District. The lookout area has ample parking space, and visitors can access the walking track and other attractions from this point.
