Description

Gregson Park in Hamilton, Newcastle, is a historic urban Victorian park gifted to Hamilton Council in 1889 by Jesse Gregson, the Superintendent of the AA Company.

The Park is located within the Hunter estuarine system and covers 3.8 hectares of land. Over the years, Gregson Park has undergone significant improvements and is now a popular recreational area for locals and visitors alike.

Gregson Park offers a range of features and attractions to visitors. Some of the notable ones include the Gregson Park Playspace, which is scheduled for construction from mid-2023 subject to funding. The playspace will feature various play equipment, including a 3-seater swing set with a basket swing, strap seat, and toddler seat; climbing net structure; whizzer spinner, accessible spinner, and seesaw; a tunnel and balance obstacle course; play mound with slide, handholds, ropes and trampolines; water and sand play; and sensory and nature play. Another attraction in Gregson Park is the heritage-listed cannons from the 1840s. Visitors to the park can also enjoy the various floral displays, including large flower beds, several lawns, and one mile of walks and two of edging. The War Memorial built-in premier position within the park is also worth checking.

Other features in the park include the Hamilton Bowling Club, which was formed in 1896 and occupied separate bowling greens and clubhouses for ‘ladies and gentlemen.' Tennis courts were also built, with one court reserved for residents and the other for teachers and senior scholars at the public school.

Gregson Park is open to visitors all year round and offers various amenities, including upgraded amenities, disabled access, BBQ facilities, informal and formal seating areas
