Description

The small town of Oberon is located on a chilly plateau, 1113 meters above sea-level.

It is situated 42 km southeast of Bathurst and 183 km west of Sydney. The town falls under the Central Tablelands and has a true mountain climate. The main rural industries in Oberon are prime lambs and beef cattle, with other agricultural activities also present.

Visitors to Oberon can enjoy a range of outdoor activities. Lake Oberon, a reservoir created by the Oberon Dam, is popular for fishing and camping. The Oberon Common is the main park in town, offering walking and cycling trails, ponds, wetlands, and playgrounds. Gairloch Garden is a cool climate garden with beautiful hedges and trellises. The historic Oberon Colong Stock 4WD Stock Route takes visitors through the Kanangra-Boyd wilderness to the ghost town of Yerranderie. Abercrombie River National Park, south of Oberon, is ideal for hiking, camping, and 4WD touring.

The best time to visit Oberon is during the summer months of December to February when the weather is warm and dry. The easiest way to get to Oberon is by car, with a 2.5-hour drive from Sydney and a 1.5-hour drive from Bathurst. Alternatively, visitors can take a train from Sydney to Lithgow and then a bus to Oberon.
