Located at the heart of the Simpson Desert, Munga-Thirri - Simpson Desert Conservation Park And Regional Reserve Oodnadatta is an outstanding example of a parallel dunal desert, showcasing the driest region of the Australian continent.

Covering several hundred kilometers, the region spans three states of Australia - South Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.

Visitors can explore this vast and ever-changing region by four-wheel driving through the striking red dunes, expansive grasslands, dense scrublands, and salt-crusted lakes. After the rains, the desert comes alive with colorful wildflowers that bloom across the sand dunes. Exploring the ample wildlife preserved in a varied landscape of dune systems, acacia woodlands, and spinifex grasslands is also an excellent opportunity for visitors.

Weather-wise, it is best to visit Munga-Thirri - Simpson Desert Conservation Park And Regional Reserve Oodnadatta between April and September when the temperatures are bearable.

The park is accessible through the Birdsville Track, which links Birdsville to Maree. Visitors will require a Desert Parks Pass, which can be purchased before entry into the park. As of 16 March 2014, visitors are also required to have high visibility safety flags attached to the front of their vehicles to ensure their safety.
