Description
Bob Byington returns with the wonderfully downbeat Lousy Carter, a sharply dry-witted and deadpan tale of the titular Carter, a brilliant performance from David Krumholtz!
Man-child Carter teaches a graduate class on The Great Gatsby and tries to get by, even as his life seems to be running towards its end… Carter is a man who seems to be surrounded by people who don’t really like him, from his ex-wife to his mother. Even his friends seem indifferent to him.
Director Byington is in his element here and as the film unwinds it becomes impossible to look away, an offbeat bleak comic study of humans that plays like a nihilistic slow-motion car crash. Byington, and his excellent cast (which includes Martin Starr and Olivia Thirlby), create a work that makes for compulsive, darkly comic viewing.
“…another of Byington’s immaculately mean comedies with an underlying sentimental streak” – Vadim Rizov, Filmmaker Magazine
"Lousy Carter thrives on Byington’s astute script, punctuated by rapid-fire, sardonic banter, and an ensemble cast adeptly elevating the deadpan humor.” – Screen Anarchy
