Description

Welcome to Cape Nelson State Park.

Located near Portland on Victoria's southwest coast, Cape Nelson State Park is a pristine natural attraction spanning across 243 hectares (600 acres) of land. Visitors can enjoy a range of outdoor activities including a 3-kilometre (2 mi) clifftop walk, exploring the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and hiking along the Great South West Walk.

Built-in 1884, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse is a fascinating piece of history that still stands tall overlooking the sea. It has been fully restored and is now home to the Light Station Keepers Cottages, which are available for accommodation. The interior of the lighthouse and cottage features can be seen in the well-known 2010 romantic drama South Solitary.

Cape Nelson State Park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Fauna includes the Heath Mouse, Red-necked Wallaby, and Echidna. The main vegetation types in the park are Soap Mallee, Heath, and Wet Heath.

A significant part of the Great South West Walk traverses through the park, and it is an excellent way to explore the natural beauty of the region. The walk takes hikers through scenic tracks, coastal cliffs and into Victoria's forest parks.

Cape Nelson State Park is open all year round, and visitors can stay overnight in the Light Station Keepers Cottages. There are barbeque facilities, tables, and chairs available for public use within the park. Admission is free, but accommodation bookings are essential.
