Description

Chowilla Game Reserve and Regional Reserve is a protected area located on the north side of River Murray in South Australia.

It covers the floodplain area from northeast of Renmark to the New South Wales border. The reserve was proclaimed on April 8, 1993, and shares its territory with the Chowilla Regional Reserve.

Originally, the purpose of the community consultation process was to allow waterfowl hunting in selected areas of the Chowilla floodplain. This led to the proclamation of Chowilla Game Reserve and Regional Reserve. As an IUCN Category VI protected area, visitors are welcome to enjoy nature but are not permitted to engage in commercial activities or extract natural resources.

The Chowilla floodplain is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. This recognition highlights the significance of the floodplain not only for the region but also for the entire world.

Visitors to Chowilla Game Reserve and Regional Reserve can observe a variety of wildlife species, including kangaroos, emus, kookaburras, and the elusive red-tailed black-cockatoo. The area is also home to unique plants and vegetation. The reserve offers walking trails and picnic spots, making it an ideal destination for day trips or weekend getaways.

Experience the untouched beauty of nature, witness wildlife in their natural habitat, and explore the protected floodplains that make this region crucial for wetlands conservation.
