Description
Illustrious conductor Jaime Martín joins our musicians for this spectacular concert.
Paganini composed an array of tunes for violin – and Rachmaninov was such a fan that he borrowed one and wrote 24 flashy variations of his own. Pianist Denis Kozhukhin will perform them all in one rhapsodic sitting, every brush of the keys infused with intense focus and flair. Afterwards, it’s Brahms’ luscious Symphony No.4. You might find it comparable to Beethoven, at first. But once you’re knee-deep in these ferocious melodies, you’ll hear Brahms finally escaping the shadow of his predecessor to leave a monumental legacy of his own. For those attending the Saturday concert, you will be treated to a performance of Ravel’s wondrous Le Tombeau de Couperin. It’s about the everlasting bond of friendship, and each movement – from the strange to the sprightly – honours someone Ravel held close to his heart.
