Description

Storm King Dam is a must-visit destination in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia.

This man-made reservoir is located in the locality of Storm King and provides water for the town of Stanthorpe.

Storm King Dam was created by damming Quart Pot Creek, which serves as the inflow and outflow of the dam. It is located at 28.7425°S 151.9923°E? / -28.7425; 151.9923? and 28.7091°S 151.9931°E? / -28.7091; 151.9931? respectively.

The dam was named after the Storm King Mining Company, which was set up by John Yaldwyn and James Ross. The company was named after the sailing ship, Storm King, which brought them to Australia in 1872. The present dam was built by the Stanthorpe Shire Council in 1954, although it was first proposed in 1928. It supplies water to residents of Stanthorpe and irrigation purposes. In 2008, following local government area amalgamations, the dam was taken over by the Southern Downs Regional Council. Storm King Dam has also been used for recreational purposes since the 1980s.

Storm King Dam is an excellent place for recreational activities. Visitors can indulge in fishing, water sports, bird watching and picnics.
