Aurat Raj

Aurat Raj, The Rule of the Woman, is a work about curiosity of the the invisibility of women’s labour. Women’s labour is written in our ancestral history and continues to be our very reality.

It’s in their ability to cater to everyone’s needs every day. It’s in the workforce. It’s in motherhood. It’s in domesticity. It’s in the recipes passed down over the generations. It’s in the course hands of our mothers, our aunties, our grandmothers.

I wonder if this labour were to be acknowledged,

maybe we would call it,

Aurat Raj

but we don’t.

Told through a chorus of five BIPOC women, Aurat Raj is a devised work that uses cultural movement and text to explore the ideas of the invisibility of women’s labour in the name of duty and purpose.
