Description

Kaluna Park & Island Wangaratta is a natural experience located just a short walk from the city center.

The park covers an area of 5.2 hectares and features 1.2km of walking trails, making it a beautiful place to take a stroll surrounded by stunning scenery. The park has undergone regular bush restoration since 1995, with efforts made to restore the local habitat. A brochure with a map and notes about the park is available from the Visitor Information Centre.

The park is a haven for a variety of birds, making it a prime spot for bird watchers. There are also seats throughout the park, providing the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Barbecue and toilet facilities are located nearby in Merriwa Park, making it easy to have a picnic with family and friends.

Adjoining Kaluna Park is Kaluna Island, which is bordered by the King River. The island covers an area of over 18 hectares and is home to many beautiful and rare plant species, as well as an abundance of native wildlife. Access to Kaluna Island is only available for foot traffic, over a concrete bridge located at the bottom of Thomas Street, off Wilson Road in Wangaratta. The bridge crosses the anabranch and leads to a cleared walking track that circles the park.

Kaluna Island is home to many significant trees, some of which are over 300 years old. The island also has Apple Box, a rare species of Eucalyptus, and old River Bottlebrush, as well as beautiful native grasses including large stands of Kangaroo Grass. Ongoing habitat restoration works ensure that this remnant bushland is home to an abundance of native wildlife throughout the year.
