Description

High Country Rail Trail is a 35-kilometre trail on the northern border of Victoria, Australia.

It used to be part of the Cudgewa railway line and now serves as a stunning trail for cyclists and hikers. The trail runs from Wodonga to Shelley railway station, offering breathtaking views along the way.

The trail comprises both sealed and unsealed sections, catering to riders with different preferences. The eight-kilometre section from Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta is completely sealed, while the rest of the trail is accessible via hybrid, gravel, or mountain bikes, allowing riders to explore less populated areas.

The section from Bullioh to Shelley features a long and gradual climb, reaching an altitude of 779 metres at Shelley. With easy grades of 2-3%, this climb is suitable for riders of varying fitness levels.

One of the highlights of the High Country Rail Trail is the extensive views of Lake Hume, which riders can enjoy from Wodonga to Tallangatta. The trail also features historic trestle bridges on the climb to Shelley.

It is important to note that facilities are limited from Tallangatta to Koetong, so riders should bring enough food and water for the trip.

Future plans for the trail include extending it to Cudgewa near Corryong, significantly increasing its length. High Country Rail Trail is a must-visit destination for cycling and hiking enthusiasts, offering breathtaking views and varying levels of difficulty to explore.
