Fossil Bluff Lookout

Tourist attractions

Description

Fossil Bluff Lookout is a must-visit destination in Tasmania for those interested in geology and fossils.

It is situated in Wynyard, a coastal town in North West Tasmania. Millions of years of history are revealed through the beach and cliff faces at Fossil Bluff, which makes the site seem like an ancient, geographical library.

Fossil Bluff Lookout offers a 15-minute walk and spectacular views in all directions. Low tide is the best time to wander along the beach and search for evidence of life from millions of years past. The booklet 'Explore the Wonders of Wynyard's Geology' is recommended before visiting Fossil Bluff. It provides information about the geology of the area and makes for an interesting read before visiting. In addition to Fossil Bluff Lookout, visitors can also take a Table Cape lookout to lighthouse walk (30 minutes return) or go on a Table Cape Lighthouse tour (20 minutes).

The best time to visit Fossil Bluff Lookout is during low tide when it's easier to see fossils on the rocks. North West Tasmania has a temperate maritime climate with mild summers and cool winters. As such, the best time to visit would be during summer (December-February) when temperatures are warmer.

To get to Fossil Bluff Lookout, visitors can start their journey at the Wonders of Wynyard Exhibition and Visitor Information Centre. From here, it takes about 20-30 minutes drive to reach Fossil Bluff Lookout. Visitors can fly into Burnie Airport or Devonport Airport and then drive to Wynyard. Alternatively, visitors can drive from Hobart, which takes around four hours.
