Description

Elevating the entertaining areas to the upper level has afforded this home 180-degree panoramic westerly views out to the Indian Ocean.

Punctuating the urban landscape with its exquisitely fine horizontal rooflines and daring cantilevered swimming pool, this coastal gem presents an interesting take on modern minimalism. The principal objective was to maximise views to the ocean, and overcome the challenges that came with building on an awkward south-facing corner block that sloped steep into a hollow.

A solution was to place the living areas upstairs, and the children’s bedrooms and garaging below with the basement, to maintain privacy and natural light. The pool, meanwhile, became a striking aspect of the architectural form.

The four-car garage is accessed via a driveway under the glass-faced swimming pool, and a softly curved wall leads visitors to the entry. Indoors, an open-tread stairway and three-storey picture window are the primary focal points - a pivotal design choice that allowed the plan to be split in half and step down the embankment to conform to height restrictions.

To the left, a lift travels to the upper living zones for a splash of luxury.

Sweeping views out to the horizon greet the upstairs occupants on arrival, and confirm that the architect’s decision for an unconventional program was warranted. The wrap-around northern aspect of the terrace permits the inside and outside to flow naturally, and maximum wind protection be provided to the outdoor living area. It also defines access to the master bedroom suite, which hovers dramatically over the rear garden.

Concrete was carefully considered for the construction, for its ability to withstand the windy and corrosive environment. This also meant a more slender roof structure could be built to contrast with the traditionally masculine foundations. Simplicity of line and minimalistic detailing were paramount to creating a strong sculptural form.

Passive heating and cooling are accommodated with large roof overhangs, allowing shading in summer and deep penetration of sunlight into living areas in winter.
