Description
The Black Powder Mill in Cairnlea is a historically significant heritage-listed building that functioned as a black powder (gunpowder) factory.
It is the only surviving building of the former Albion Explosives Factory in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The mill is a testament to the explosives industry that centred around the Maribyrnong River and provided employment opportunities in Victoria for over 140 years.
Visitors to the Black Powder Mill can experience the rich history of gunpowder and explosives in Deer Park and learn about the production process. The mill machinery is in operation during the open day, giving visitors a firsthand glimpse of the manufacturing process of black powder. One can also witness the firing of 19th-century firearms and chat with Friends of the Black Powder Mill Incorporated, who will be happy to provide interesting insights into the history and workings of the mill.
The only way to visit the Black Powder Mill is during the Brimbank council's annual open day. During the open day, visitors can learn about the mill's history and production of explosives, see the machinery in operation, and witness the firing of 19th-century firearms. The open day takes place once a year around April. Check with the Brimbank council for the exact date and time.
The Black Powder Mill is located at the corner of Parklea Avenue and Grassy Point Road, Cairnlea, which is about 17 km north-west of Melbourne CBD. Visitors should make their way to the site by car or taxi. There is ample parking available at the site, and the mill is easily accessible from the nearby roads.
