Welcome to Butcher Gap Conservation Park!
Located in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, this protected area was established in 1990 and covers 40 hectares (99 acres). It is conveniently situated about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of the town of Kingston SE and overlooks Lacepede Bay.
The park consists of a wetland area of 40 hectares (99 acres), including Salt Lake and Butchers Lake, divided by the Butcher Gap Drain. The primary natural habitat in this region is a dense South Australian swamp paperbark over marine meadow. The rest of the park is characterized by coastal scrub. The Butcher Gap Drain area, leased to the South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage Board, serves as an important seasonal habitat for migratory birds and waterfowl.
Butcher Gap Conservation Park is recognized as suitable habitat for the endangered orange-bellied parrot.
The park has been classified as a Category III protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), indicating its status as a protected landscape/seascape with sustainable use of natural resources.
