Description
Cape Le Grand National Park is a picturesque national park located in Western Australia, southeast of Perth and east of Esperance.
It covers a vast land of 31,801 hectares and is known for its unique ancient landscape. The park, established in 1966, is managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife and is named after one of the officers on L'Espérance.
The park features a stunning granite shoreline and white sand beaches that attract visitors. It offers opportunities for off-roading, fishing, tourism, and hiking. Some of the beaches within the park include Lucky Bay, Rossiter Bay, Hellfire Bay, Le Grand Beach, and Thistle Cove. Cape Le Grand National Park is bordered by the Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve and the Cape Arid National Park to the east. The southwest part of the park is characterized by rock outcrops of gneiss and granite, forming peaks like Mount Le Grand, Frenchman Peak, and Mississippi Hill. The inland region of the park is covered with heath-covered sandplain, with swamps and pools of fresh water.
The park is home to various species of flora and fauna. The sandplains support dense stands of banksias, including Banksia speciosa and Banksia pulchella. Other flora species found in the park include Melaleuca, Grevillea, sheoak, Christmas tree, and grass trees. During spring, wildflower blooms peak, showcasing species such as the blue china orchid, Diuris corymbosa, Hakea laurina, Thysanotus sparteus, and Thelymitra macrophylla.
