Description

The City Heritage Walk in Whyalla is a 1.9 km circuit trail located in the north-eastern end of the city.

It takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and is suitable for walking, dog walking, and public transport. The trail can be accessed by bus or car.

Along the City Walk, visitors can explore historic sites and enjoy panoramic views of Whyalla's city, Spencer Gulf, and Flinders Ranges. The trail follows the Whyalla steelworks fence on the northern side of Hummock Hill, leading to the top and then winding down to the central business district. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information on the settlement's history, industrial history, natural and maritime heritage, and unique architecture. Visitors can also examine the guns used to protect the township during World War II from the top of Hummock Hill.

The trail is undulating and of moderate difficulty. The route to the top of Hummock Hill is a walking trail, but it can be steep and merges with the road towards the top. When walking clockwise and coming down from Hummock Hill, most trail users would identify the trail simply as a bike lane.

The City Heritage Walk can be enjoyed all year round, but late spring or fall is the best time to go when the weather is milder.

To access the trail, visitors can take a bus or drive by car. The trail begins and ends at the corner of Jamieson and Horwood Streets and is marked on the town map in the Whyalla Visitor Guide. The trail is marked in yellow.

The City Walk is part of the Centenary Trailways Project, which celebrates 100 years since Whyalla was settled by Europeans. It is one of the three trails that make up the project,
